Agreement to offer free access to online courses

Interested in learning what it takes to be a web developer? How about a digital illustrator? Or a computer programmer?

Starting Sept. 1, Ohio residents with a valid library card, including patrons of Southwest Public Libraries, will be able to access thousands of online professional development courses, remotely and in the library, for free.

The Ohio Library Council (OLC) and the Ohio Public Library Information Netword (OPLIN) recently announced a partnership with LinkedIn to offer free access to Lynda.com, an online service network of more than 12,000 self-guided courses on subjects such as business, computer programming, design, photography, and software development. These self-guided, video courses are taught by industry experts, designed for any skill level, and useful to anyone looking to learn business, technology, and creative skills.

Lynda.com is a paid subscription, but through the agreement among the OLC, OPLIN, and LinkedIn (the parent company of Lynda.com), any Ohio library cardholder will be able to access the service through any computer with internet access.

This agreement, according to information from OPLIN and the OLC, is the first of its kind in the nation between LinkedIn and a statewide system of public libraries.

This is an exciting development, allowing libraries to offer another valuable resource to patrons, small businesses, employers, and local organization. Stay tuned for further information as we get closer to the September launch.
