Members of the Grove City Council and the Southwest Public Libraries Board of Trustees have approved declarations of intent to pursue negotiations to construct a new Grove City Library in Grove City’s Town Center. The current library was last expanded in 1974 when Grove City’s population was 9,000, and is inadequate to serve the needs of a community with a population now approaching 40,000.
Library Director Mark Shaw said, “The library currently has only 16,000 square feet of public service space and lacks adequate programming space, meeting rooms and quiet study areas. Parking is also a chronic problem.”
The plan to construct a new Grove City Library is part of a larger plan for the redevelopment of Grove City’s Town Center submitted by the Pizzuti Development Company. The plan involves transfer of the existing Grove City Library to the City of Grove City for the future development of a city government complex. The city would acquire land in the Town Center area and construct a new library of approximately 50,000 square feet. Any new building would be owned and controlled by Southwest Public Libraries.
The new library would feature more Internet computers and additional parking. Space would be increased for quiet study areas, meeting rooms, and children’s programming. The project is complex and it is anticipated that it will be several months before an announcement on an agreement is made. Any agreement will have to approved by Grove City Council and the Southwest Public Libraries Board of Trustees.
