New Grove City Library opens to fanfare

Military History: Guadalcanal Odyssey

The Battle of Guadalcanal was the first major offensive victory for the Allies in the Pacific theater and one of the most brutal battles fought during World War II.

Join Master Sgt. Stephen Walter USMCR (Ret.) for a two-part program featuring the documentary Guadalcanal Odyssey followed by a discussion about the battle and how the island has recovered from the devastation of the war.

The program will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 20 and 27, at Grove City Library, 3959 Broadway.

13 Days of Halloween

For the third year in a row, 13 Days of Halloween is back at Westland Area Library, 4740 W. Broad St.

Every day, from Oct. 19 through Oct. 31, the Westland Youth Services department will host a different program for children and teens, promising all sorts of spooky, Halloween fun at the library.

The schedule is as follows:

  • Oct. 19 – Stop in and guess how much candy corn is in the jar. The correct amount will be revealed on Oct. 31.
  • Oct. 20 – Preschool Storytime presents “Not so Scary Monsters” at 10:30 a.m.
  • Oct. 21 – Decorate your own pumpkin. Available all day.
  • Oct. 22 – Watch the Spooky Buddies movie at 3 p.m.
  • Oct. 23 – Come in and make a spooky bookmark. Available all day.
  • Oct. 24 – The Franklin County Coroner’s Office will be at the library at 6:30 p.m. to talk and conduct a crime scene. This event is for teens only.
  • Oct. 25 – “Fun and Spooky Monster” Music and Movement Storytime at 10:30 a.m.
  • Oct. 26 – Dress up in your favorite costume for Baby/Toddler Storytime at 10:30 a.m.
  • Oct. 27 – Preschool Storytime at 10:30 a.m. will be about “Spooky Kitties.” Come dressed in your favorite costume.
  • Oct. 28 – Make your own ghost. Available all day.
  • Oct. 29 – Starting at 11 a.m., bring in your own decorated pumpkin for our Pumpkin Decorating Contest. Judging will be done at 11:25 a.m., and the winners will be announced at 11:30. Stay for the Monster Party.
  • Oct. 30 – Come in and make a spooky bookmark. Available all day.
  • Oct. 31 – Stop in for Trick-or-Treat.
